javier garcia, also known as javi, is the protagonist of telltale's the walking dead: a new frontier. prior to the outbreak, he was a professional baseball player - his career, however, was cut short due to his gambling habits. this, alongside his lack of commitment to his family, culminated in his life ruining long before the dead walked.
while javi is played in accordance to the player's choices and thus somewhat variable in personality, there are a few qualities that stick. for example, his seamless banter with characters like kate and clementine cement him as a sardonic and witty figure. his charisma is another trait that bleeds through these interactions. salvador, his father, describes him as a foolhardy, handsome gambler.
javi is voiced by jeff schine. when interviewed by alternative magazine online, schine had this to say about his character:
" Javi is a complicated guy. I think he’s got a healthy level of confidence, he’s direct, a little selfish. But also strong willed, honest, and sensitive. I think he’s got a definite moral compass. Before the apocalypse Javi was a lot more concerned about himself than anyone else. I think he always knew the difference between right and wrong, always knew that people expected more from him, but I think it was just easier to not make those hard choices. He was younger, an athlete, thought he had it made and was just sort of doing his own thing.
I just think he wanted to avoid responsibility. I don’t think there’s any question that he loved his family, it was just easier to live his own life. The zombie apocalypse changed Javi a lot. It was honestly the best thing that coulda happened to him in a weird way. He was thrust into responsibility, he was forced to grow up, to put others ahead of himself. He had to basically adopt a father role for his brother’s kids. I think adversity reveals character, not necessarily creates it… so I think these qualities were always in Javi, he just didn’t know how to find them. He’s a natural leader. "
fun facts
- he is canonically bisexual, making him one of twelve lgbt characters to appear in the telltale series.
- despite having played professional baseball in baltimore, the jersey that javier wears throughout the game doesn't resemble those worn by baltimore's only professional baseball team, the orioles; in fact, his jersey more closely resembles that of a kansas city royals or tampa bay rays uniform.
- he once played a minor league game in arkansas before he was expelled, commissioning a charter plane to fly him there.
- he is the first character in the telltale series to have some kind of celebrity status. he is one of few celebrities in the walking dead franchise, and one of four professional athletes encountered in the comic universe.
- on his team, javier played shortstop. this position is often considered the most demanding and challenging position on the field.

feelings
i was introduced to telltale's twd through a close friend, with whom i played the first two (and eventually fourth) seasons during high school. the series continues to have a visceral emotional impact on me, and so i hold it close to my heart.
that said, i'd never gotten around to the third season because it panned away from clementines story and was so poorly received by the fanbase....i'm glad i changed my mind though!
caramelo duro
caramelo duro is the ship name for me and javi ^_^ he meets my self-insert, a fellow survivor, during his short stay in prescott.
manolo was a college student visiting their siblings over break when the outbreak hit. sometime during the apocalypse, they and their remaining sister joined the community of prescott where they worked as patrolmen, and eventually met javier. prescott falls and takes their sister with it, forcing manolo to join javier's family in their search for a new home. it's amidst the ruins that they find one in each other.
